3 Mistakes I Made (Early On In My SMM Career

Starting a Social Media Management (SMM) business is no small feat, and like any other venture, it comes with its fair share of mistakes and lessons learned. Here are some early misconceptions I had and the realizations that I came to understand as I navigated the world of social media marketing.

1 – I thought clients understood the importance of being online for their business.

One of the first major mistakes I made was overestimating the client’s understanding of the importance of online presence. The reality is, many businesses still do not fully grasp the immense value that a strong online presence can bring. In fact, social media management is often the first expense to be cut when businesses need to make budget reductions. This underscores the need for clear communication and education about the significance of online marketing strategies.

2 – I thought analytics were only for mid level – high end clients.

Another misconception I had was that analytics were only essential for mid to high-end clients. In actuality, the smaller the client, the more they need the data! Analytics provide insights into customer behaviour, enabling businesses to tailor their strategies to meet their audience’s needs and preferences. Regardless of the size of the business, data-driven decisions can significantly enhance marketing effectiveness and, in turn, boost business growth.

3 – I thought just posting was enough.

The early days of my SMM business were marked by the belief that merely posting on social media platforms was sufficient.

However, as I delved deeper into the industry, I quickly realized that this was far from the truth. In today’s digital age, merely posting is a distant second to keeping up with almost weekly/monthly platform updates, building a robust online community, and actively engaging with that community.

And of course, all of these efforts should be guided by a well-thought-out strategy.

Despite these early mistakes, the lessons I’ve learned have shaped my approach to social media management and have driven me to help other businesses thrive online.
